Addiction from drug and alcohol abuse are well known to have risen to epidemic levels in communities all over our country.
Many times they have a bi-directional linkage with behavioral health conditions.
Few of us have remained untouched by the impact that addiction has had on us and our loved ones.
It is generally understood that addiction related offenses (theft, assault, possession, etc.) make of more than 80% of the charges for those incarcerated in our jails and prisons.
Unless addressed, upon re-entry, most of these addiction issues will lead to future illegal acitivities and subsequent mulitple returns to incarceration.
Homlessness is an increasing problem, aggravated by COVID, behavrioral health issues, addiction, as well as a shortage of affordable houseing.
It is estimated that there are well over 400 homeless individuals and familes living in the woods, cars, other sites around Charlotte County.
For those released from incarceration, there are very few safe places to reside.
